Shape and materials

This is a full-face helmet with a detachable external peak visor. It comes in sizes XS to XXXL, so no matter what kind of sizing you need, you'll be able to purchase this helmet.

The AT950 is made of three shell sizes from advanced LG polycarbonate and dual density EPS. These materials make this helmet very lightweight (it weighs only four pounds), but also protective and strong. The three shell sizes truly optimize weight, fit and comfort. The helmet's liner is made with KwikWick II. It does not have a pinlock. It has a nylon chip strap with a double D-ring buckle.

Overall comfort

This helmet was made with your comfort in mind. Its soft KwickWick II interior liner is antimicrobial, so it wicks sweat away from your face. Also, it is removable, so you can wash it.

As we mentioned earlier, this helmet comes in a variety of sizes. If your size ends up being a little too snug or loose, don't return the helmet right away. Scorpion makes different cheek pad sizes which help you tailor the helmet to your exact fit. You can order them online or call the company and have extra cheek pads mailed to you.

The chin guard on this helmet adds to its comfort level. The chin guard has an EPS lining, which is both comfortable and great for safety and overall protection. Scorpion has a solid reputation for manufacturing safe chin guards, so you can feel confident when wearing this helmet. Scorpion advises riders not to use this helmet with its chin bar raised or with the chin guard up. The helmet won't be as secure and could come off while riding. To maximize the protection this helmet offers, you should always wear it properly and keep the chin bar down.

Users have rated this helmet 90 out of 100 in terms of comfort. People love the different cheek pad options and the fact that this helmet comes in so many sizes.

Things I don’t like

  • Safety features have not been tested
  • Not quiet for off-road riding
  • Not great ventilation for off-road riding and hot weather

Visibility

The AT950 provides outstanding visibility with broad sight lines to the left, right and lower areas. Its eye port adds extended visibility, which is a huge advantage.

This helmet's excellent visibility makes it possible to wear it safely in the rain. Water does not get through the eye port seals, and the top vents, chin vent and brow vent are sealed tightly as well.

The face shield on the AT950 is amazing. It creates excellent peripheral vision and allows you to have deep downward vision, as well. It is not a quick-release shield because it shares a pivot with the peak on the helmet, but that's not a huge deal because there is a drop-down sun visor. You won't have to keep swapping out different shields if it gets sunny outside.

The sun visor on the AT950 can be adjusted with a small slider behind the left shield pivot. It is not very tinted because law prohibits it, and you wouldn’t want it to cut out that much light anyway. The sun visor's front and back is coated in Everclear anti-fog, which is very convenient.

Users have rated this helmet 95 out of 100 in terms of visibility, which is fantastic. This helmet truly has great visibility and makes riding very easy.

Quietness

If you are used to wearing a variety of helmets, then you know that modular helmets are much noisier than full-face helmets. This is because of more complex helmet shapes and more space around the chin bar for air to get through. For some people, this can be an issue because the wind can get too loud for comfort.

Although the AT950 is a modular helmet with peaks and grooves, users share that it is a pretty quiet helmet. Don't expect it to be as quiet as a full-face helmet, though. Many people use earplugs to lessen the extreme winds.

Users have rated this 85 out of 100 in terms of quietness. If you're riding on the road, the helmet makes for a pretty quiet ride.

Ventilation

Despite only having a single chin and crown vent, the AT950's ventilation is excellent for road riding. However, if you're planning on doing some strenuous off-roading, the ventilation won't be amazing. If the weather is too hot and humid, two vents isn’t enough to make this helmet comfortable.

The chin vent has a three-way slider; keeping it all the way up closes it, flipping it down once will vent the back of the shield, and flipping it fully down will direct air toward your face. Leaving the top slider is open will push the air through the helmet.

Most users say that the venting is great for road riding, and that the chin curtain is perfect for stopping a draft, unless you like the extra ventilation. If you become very hot while riding, you can always push the shield up all the way and ride with the helmet's sun visor down.

Users have rated this 88 out of 100 in terms of ventilation. Again, the ventilation is great for road riding, but if you go on lots of off-roading adventures, this may not be the ideal helmet for you.

Safety

Every helmet is created with your safety in mind, but some provide better protection than others.

The AT950 is DOT and ECE certified, which is great. Neither Snell nor SHARP have tested this particular helmet, but SHARP has some test data for other Scorpion helmets.

The AT950 is a polycarbonate helmet, and the last few of these Scorpion helmets have scored four- and three-star reviews. They’ve also tested some flip-front Scorpion helmets. One of the helmets' chin bars stayed locked and closed 97 percent of the time, which is well above average.

Of course, because these helmets were not identical to the Scorpion AT950, the results are not specific to this helmet. Given the SHARP ratings of similar helmets, we would assume that this helmet would receive at least a three-star rating and a 95 percent chin bar score. Once SHARP or Snell gets around to testing it, we will update our review.

Other safety features on this helmet make it a great purchase. Its visor shield allows for great peripheral vision and has an Everclear anti-fog coating to ensure clear vision regardless of the weather. The sun visor has an Everclear coat, as well.

Conclusion

The fact that this particular helmet's safety features have not been tested is a big deal, and can deter some people from purchasing it. Keep in mind that Scorpion is a legitimate manufacturer and its other helmets have been thoroughly tested. Whether or not you purchase the AT950 based upon its safety tests is a personal decision.

Everyone has different riding routines, and if you do a lot of off-roading, this may not be the helmet for you. It won't give you a quiet riding experience and the ventilation isn't something to brag about. If the majority of your riding time is spent on the road, this helmet could be just what you are looking for.

Overall, the Scorpion EXO-AT950 helmet will definitely be a riding asset. Its comfortable interior makes it pleasurable to wear, and its durable exterior makes it safe for you to wear.

Every helmet has its pros and cons, but the good qualities of the AT950 outweigh the bad ones. This helmet allows for great visibility and peripheral vision so you can always see where you're going. The interior KwickWick II lining will keep you comfortable all day long, and the Everclear anti-fog coating on the face shield and the visor make for a great ride in any weather condition.

Riding with this helmet will make you feel confident, safe and protected. Its price is very reasonable when you consider all of its great features and advantages. Very few helmets are made with this level of comfort and with so many different uses. You will love the way this helmet looks and feels.
